my topic is why slavery is a dehumanizing experience for both the slave and the slave master. My central argument on this topic is going to be in favor of why it is dehumanizing for both the slave and their master, against why some people think its just a way of life for them and they don't think its dehumanizing for either one. My argument is going to include how the slaves feel like their not a person anymore by what people tell them and how its dehumanizing for the slave holders, because when they tell them that their ruining their seft goodness and that makes them turn into a meaner person

Chapter 11 Reaction

In chapter 11 is was mostly talking about how he was going to escape. When he finally escaped I felt happy for him because all those years he was a slave and now he was free. As he was free and in New York he was homeless and had no food. That was sad to hear because all that work he did to be free and now he isn't living that well. After that he met a guy who was Mr. Ruggles, he took him in and that was good because he could finally be free and be happy. During this story they also said that his wife Anna also got to be free and now they can be happy together in New York. Towards the end of this chapter it said that he was a anti slavery speaker and could tell his story to people around the world. I thought that was good to hear that he could tell his story and speak his mind.

Reaction to pages 29-40

In the first chapter It was talking about how Fredrick got moved to Baltimore again. I thought that that was a good thing because before he liked Baltimore so much and he thought it was a lot better that the plantation. When he went to Baltimore his mistress died and so did his lovely grandmother. Then I thought it was horrible how his master tied her up and then whipped her and would leaver her there all day and come back at night and do it again. Fredrick then had to go to Mr. Covey and he was suppose to break the slaves and he was beating him so Fredrick decided to go back to his masters house because he wapped him with a piece of bored. Then his freind told him to carry a root on his right side to keep him safe and it worked for a while but then his Covey tried to beat him again and Fredrick won. I thought this was good that Fredrick won because he showed him who was boss and showed him that he was tired of getting beat on. After he showed him that he was tired of it, Mr. Covey never laid a hand on him again. Which was a very good thing and would keep him safe.

Reactions to chapter 5,6 and 7

These chapters were defiantly not as sad and depressing as the other chapters so far but some parts were still pretty sad. Frederick actually seemed like he was having a good time there rather than at the other plantation he was at. He also learned many different things while being there like, his ABC's and learning how to write. I thought it was pretty nice of his mistress to teach him his ABC's even though it could harm her if anyone found out that she was the one that taught him. Even though Mrs. Auld taught him that and was nicer to him than his other slave owner, she still seemed a little mean to him but not as bad.

One of the sad parts that was in chapter six was when he was talking about the girls that lived next to him. He said that they had like pieces and chunks cut out of their skin. Also that on one of the girls heads there was like sore from the lashes that her mistress would give her. He even saw the cow skin that she would whip them with. I thought this was very sad to read about because just imagining what they would look like is depressing. Also Frederick saying that they were in the worst condition he has seen is saying a lot because of the things that were in the earlier chapters were so bad.

Although he having to see these beaten and unwanted girls, I think the rest of his time there was pretty good. Another thing that could be a good thing but also a bad thing of he being there was him learning to read. Its a great thing to actually read if you have never been taught before but also when your that one person that understands things that your masters don't want you to know could be a bad thing if you were listening and they found out that you were, you could get beaten more or killed.

Reaction to Slave Ship

My reaction to this clip is that I have never seen people being beaten and hurt that much as they were. It was very sad to see people getting hurt like that and have them bleeding all over the place. I think I would jump off the ship because I wouldn't want to go through all that pain and suffering to soon find out that im going to die later anyways. I don't think it would be worth it to go through all that and never knowing if it's going to stop or if im going to be free soon. If i was on board with my baby I would probably do what that one girl did and jump off withh my baby so that my baby wouldn't have to go through all that. I wouldn't know if they would kill my baby and beat it like they did eveeryone else but I wouldn't want to stay around and find out.

Chapters 2,3 & 4

            In these chapters it continued to talk about how bad it was being a slave. My reaction to this story is that its still very sad. The masters of the slaves do cruel things to them. Then he goes on to talk about how whatever the slaves do they beaten no matter what. The slaves are suppose to be good to their masters but even when they are good they still get beaten. He also talks about the different times that he or the other slaves are getting beaten. Reading this story just puts you into a sad emotion, but maybe at will get a little happier later on in the story.

Chapter 1 Reaction

          My reaction to chapter one is that it was sad to hear about his life. Not knowing what your real birthday is or how old you really are is not really a good thing. Also he only saw his mother a few times and when he did it was at night for only a short amount of time. Not only having no mother he didnt have a father, so his new parents were his masters. He talked about how he would hear at night the beatings of his old aunt by one of his masters and how horrible the sounds were and how she looked after. Though out the story he was talking about mainly how hard his life was as a slave and what he had to do while he was a slave. Overall, this was a depressing and sad story about Frederick Douglass.
